Abstract

This paper examined the relationship between social media usage, civic engagement, and democratic participation among 968 young adults aged 18–30 years, using a cross-sectional quantitative design with stratified random sampling across 15 universities and urban communities. The primary motivation for this research was the growing influence of digital platforms on political behaviors in a demographic increasingly central to contemporary democratic processes. We collected primary data through structured questionnaires, constructed multiple indices including the Social Media Engagement Index and the Democratic Participation Index, and applied Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for analysis. Our results demonstrated that social media engagement significantly predicted democratic participation (), and that civic engagement () and political awareness () emerged as even stronger predictors. The overall model explained 70.5% of the variance in democratic participation. Furthermore, the SEM analysis confirmed satisfactory model fit (CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.048), and we observed that highly active social media users exhibited approximately 24.7% higher civic engagement and 21.9% greater political awareness compared to less active peers. A strong positive correlation was also found between social media engagement and civic participation (). Digital literacy played a significant moderating role (). Therefore, this study contributes novel evidence that social media acts as a catalyst for democratic participation primarily through the mediating pathways of civic engagement and political awareness. The significance lies in highlighting the necessity of fostering digital literacy to counter misinformation and to promote informed, active citizenship among young adults.
